Mycelium reaches toward the last few grains in this LC-inoculated jar. THEO ROSENFELD

USING GRAIN SPAWN

Once fully myceliated and free of noticeable contaminants, use grain spawn promptly or store in the fridge until you’re ready to use. Mycelium knits all the grains together, so they must be broken apart before use. This is done by shaking and/or banging jars on a tire or upholstered furniture (not your body). While it usually takes some force, be as gentle as you can be to prevent avoidable damage to the mycelium. If growing grain spawn in filter patch bags (discussed in Chapter 7), simply break it up with your hands before opening the bag. Grain spawn will turn brown from shaking, as the mycelium gets broken up and matted down. The more finely broken up, the more points of inoculation there will be in the substrate, leading to faster myceliation. The same goes for sawdust spawn. The amount of spawn you will use depends on the mass and nutrient levels of your substrate. For instructions on spawning to fruiting substrates, see Chapter 7.
